Job roles of a multi-camera production

Job roles 

Camera operator

The camera operators job is vital as they are expected to work long hours and may need to travel depending on  the television programme they work for, the camera operator is respnsible for making sure that the composistion and angle of the shot are the same throughout the shot. During filmmaking the camera operator will also make technical and creative decisions with the rest of the cast and crew, they must also be able to multi-task as they have to watch and listen for instructions keeping them on their feet.
Skills:
  • The camera operator must have advanced technical skills this is because they would need to know how to use the camera.
  • The camera operator must also have creative skills this is so that they can make the shots or scenes more interesting than it being just one shot.
  • They must also be able to operate the camera so that they can get the desired affect that they want.
The role does not require any specific qualifications, however you could enroll in a filming school or a training course as it can offer the basic skills and knowledge that you would need to know, other courses offer practical experience and may also include work experience placements.


Sound mixing

The sound mixer is responsible for making sure that all the sound on set is recorded using professional equipment, the sound mixer tends to arrive at the locations where they are filming and is expected to bring his own equipment for example microphones, mixing desk, headphones and cables. They also may be asked to record a wide range of sounds on location, and consider the format of the fnished product.

Skills:
  • One skill would be that they have to have good communication skills
  • They also have to a have a precise attention to detail
  • Another skill would be having the ability to perform and make decisions under pressure
The role of sound mixer does require that they take specific training before they can begin at a junior level. As their skills develop they can go up in the sound department.


Vision mixing

The vision mixer is the senior technical person, so they are responsible for working in the production control room of the studio and operates the video switcher which switches the video sources and the transitions. The vision mixer may also provide the Director with guidance on crew assignments and the camera shots.
  • They must have an accuracy for detail 
  • They must also have a wide knowledge on how to make a good video
  • They should also have the ability to multitask


Directing

The duties of a director a different depending on the type of show, they are responsible for supervising the set up of the studio for example the cameras, lighting and microphones. They would also give cues to the actors so they know they have to begin and whent hey can stop and directiong the video tape operator when to stop and start. 

Skills: 
  • They have to be promt to the loaction of filming
  • They must be able to work well in a group
  • They must also be able to control the people they work with.


Set designer

The set designer is in charge of creating the scenery of the set, they have to collaberate with the theatre director and the rest of the production team to create an environment for the production and then communicate the details with other members. They are also responsible for creating scale models of the scenery.

Skills: 
  • They have to be very creative and imaginative
  • They would need good presentation skils
  • They must also have the ability to meet deadlines

Lighting desk

The lighting desk are in charge of the lighting which are changed and made specific for live events so the will need to know how bright or dark the shot needs to be in able for it to give of the intended effect, they need to know the different equipment used in lighting and how they should use the lights for the shots.  

Skills:
  • They have to have a good understanding of the use of electricity
  • They have to know how broght the shot should be due to what the shot will contain
  • They need to know and understand the health and safety rules within electrics

Floor manager

The duties of a floor manager is to make sure that all the euipment works so that they can run through the show with no problems, they would do this before the shows starts so that they can change the equipment if need be and the would do checks during the show meaning that if there was any technical issues they would have to deal with it. They would also need to know the whole show and the set up so that they can make the necessary changes with the set and props if the for example if they change the segment of the show. They would also inform the guests on what they should expect to see happen during the show.

Skills:
  • The floor manager should have a good knowledge of what the other jobs involve so that they can do their job effectively
  • The floor manager must also be able to work under pressure
  • They must also have a good sense of timing as they have to know when a certain part of the show is going to happen.

Graphics generator

The graphics generator is an individual who deals with the still and moption graphics that will be displayed on air, the graphics are usually at the bootom of the screean as there may be other things on the screen. They should know how to use the software inorder to make the graphics, they should know the different types of graphics and where to find them. They should also know when a certain graphic should be inserted.

Skills:
  • They need to be creative and imaginative
  • They need to love their job and be interested in what their job entails
  • They need to have IT skills

VT Operator

The VT operator  places videos into the programme, they are encharge of setting up and operating the video equipment so they can record and playback the program in order for them to place the right vidoe in the right place so they follow the program log which tells them where things go. They also select the source in which they will record from.

  • They need to have excellent communication skills
  • They also have to have excellent IT skills
  • They also must be able to work effectively in groups
Presenter

The presenter is the person who introduces the show, they also host and intereview any guests that mey be appearing on the show. They have to go through rehearsals, and careful planning that needs to be done, they also have to keep the programme running on course whilst on air so they would have to work carefully with the production team and often have to folllow the instructions that they were given.
Skills:

  • The presenter must able to project their voice clearly so that they can be heard.
  • They must also have good researching skills
  • They would also need to have a broad knowledge of different interests
